Assessing Safety and Traffic Impacts of Connected Vehicle Systems

Wyoming CV Pilot aims at reducing crashes caused by adverse weather on I-80. The system is predicted to improve speed awareness, alert drivers to roadway conditions, and help drivers to avoid crashes.

Assessment of Connected Vehicle Interface Using a Driving Simulator

Results found that CV technology was most useful under poor-visibility road conditions and that FCW and Re-Routing were the most useful applications.

Case Study Exploring Crashes and Truck Crash Severity on Interstate I-80

Studies found that traffic volume and adverse weather have the highest impact on crashes, but introduction of a CV system could help reduce crashes significantly.

Simulation, Modeling, and Measurement of Driver Behavior

After testing using a driving simulator, drivers said CV systems helped to lower speeds and advanced warnings were easy to understand as well as useful for real-world situations.

Updates to the Truck Blowover Algorithm for the Pikalert® System

A blowover algorithm was developed in to warn drivers of high wind blowover risks on I-80 and was refined after real-time verification during the 2017-2018 winter season using WYDOT personnel feedback.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of a Weather-Based Variable Speed Limit for a Rural Mountainous Freeway in Wyoming

The safety effectiveness of VSL for the examined severity levels ranged between 15–29% and 12–34% using Negative Binomial (NB) and Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) models, respectively.

Performance Evaluation Framework of Wyoming Connected Vehicle Pilot Deployment Program

After Analyses, Microsimulation modeling was recommended to aid in evaluating the safety benefits of the CV applications, particularly for system performance under various penetration rates and strategies.

User Experience and Human Machine Interface Design for Connected Heavy Trucks: Lessons Learned Supporting the WYDOT Connected Vehicle Pilot

Design of CV HMI must consider the need for warnings to prompt driver response, to support safe vehicle operation and to minimize driver nuisance, while crafting a smart UX to increase adoption of the CV technology.
